The President of the Republic of Croatia represents the Republic of Croatia and acts on its behalf at home and abroad, ensures the regular and orderly functioning and stability of the government.

As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, he is responsible for the defence of the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Croatia.

The President of the Republic is a representative of the people’s sovereignty, i.e. an element of representative government. Since he is elected directly on the basis of universal and equal suffrage as are the Members of the Croatian Parliament, he enjoys equal legitimacy. Thereby, the executive power directly derives from the people.

The President of the Republic may not perform any other public or professional duty. Once elected, he resigns his membership of a political party and notifies the Croatian Parliament thereof. The President enjoys immunity. Should he commit any violation of the Constitution while discharging his duties, he is subject to impeachment.
