21st Edition of Zagreb Film Festival: The Best of the Independent Movie Scene

For film fans, autumn is the usual time to visit Zagreb. This year once again they will get a chance to watch the best independent films of international and Croatian film industry.

The 21st edition of the Zagreb Film Festival will attract numerous film fans from 5 to 12 November. Since the very start, this film festival has been dedicated to discovering and promoting cotemporary independent film and debuts of directors from around the world. Owing to the festival, and later distribution platform, it plays a major role by screening pieces that are not shown in large cinema chains and it is very important in raising audience which enjoys the art of cinema.

This year’s edition of the festival will screen one of the most noted debuts entitled Past Lives by Canadian-Korean author Celine Song. This is a romantic drama dedicated to kismet encounters. Additionally, there’s the feature debut by Jasna Nanut, the comedy Seventh Heaven, and feature debut Excursion of the director from Bosnia and Herzegovina living in Paris, Una Gunjak. There is also a satire of the modern working culture titled Do Not Expect Too Much of the End of the World by the famous Romanian director Radu Jude, as well as film Sweet Dreams, of the director from Bosnia and Herzegovina living in the Netherlands, Ena Sendijarević, and many others.

In addition to feature-length films, the competitive program of the Zagreb Film Festival includes the international and national short film competition. There are also numerous accompanying programs at ZFF intended for younger generations of cinephiles. For film professionals and all those interested in a behind-the-scenes look at the art of cinema, ZFF offers a rich program which includes masterclasses, a series of workshops, and a pitching forum.

The best films in several categories are awarded with the Golden Pram. Film screenings and other events will take place in cinemas at five locations in Zagreb and a part will be available online. A part of the rich film selection at ZFF will also be showcased in various cinemas across Croatia as part of the ZFF Travels program.
