Action-packed All-day fun

Jarun Lake is the favorite destination for many citizens of Zagreb and their guests alike. Its attractive sports facilities and entertainment events provide plentiful opportunities for an action-packed holiday and promise lots of fun all year round.

The swimming season has been in full swing since the month of May on all five beaches at Jarun Lake, the favorite summer destination for many citizens of Zagreb. Lifeguards are staffed on all of the beaches while the beach on Trešnjevka Island provides all the necessary facilities for persons with disabilities and special needs, such as access ramps, special recliners, as well as sanitary facilities. Adjacent to the beach is a playground for disabled children with a rubberized base surface, while the southern side of the large lake is the location of a multi-sensory park for the blind and visually impaired. Sculptures in the park serve as simple physical props or a tactile map to help them navigate, and the park’s design allows walkers direct contact with plants which they can touch, smell, and even taste. All features, facilities, and plants are marked in Braille, while directions are indicated by changes in the structure of the walking surfaces, walkway edges, mobile structures or differently smelling flowers.

Apart from the clean and tidy beaches, Jarun Lake boasts an array of various sports grounds and courts that have been adapted for the recreation of all generations of users, from the youngest to the not so young sports enthusiasts. The quality of the facilities has also made it the preferred venue for many professional sports events and competitions. Besides the Jarun regatta, the Hewlett-Packard Zagreb Open 2009, an international 500 meter swimming marathon, will be taking place on July 11th. Jarun is also the venue for numerous entertainment events, while Univerzijada, Trešnjevka and Rowers’ Islands, as well as the beaches of the Large and Small Lakes are littered with cafes and clubs that remain open until late at night. In late June, Jarun hosted the T-Mobile INmusic Festival, the largest open air festival in Europe, where musicians from Croatia as well as abroad performed on five stages. The same place, the Island of Croatian Youth, will also host the fourth Rokaj Fest between the 3rd and the 5th of July.
