Attractive Museum Events

This year, the Technical Museum has organized a number of attractive activities which have been very popular with visitors. Some of them were organized to mark the international year of astronomy; an increased number of visitors was recorded during the Festival of Science; and the last themed event was staged on the Day of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters, which is celebrated on 4 May. The day started with a parade of firefighters through the streets of Zagreb which included a vintage Chevrolet fire engine and an Opel from the 40’s of last century.

There will be many other attractive events at the Technical Museum in May, including interesting educational exhibitions, workshops and special events at the museum aimed at raising awareness about the need to protect the environment and activities surrounding International Museum Day on 18 May.

The Technical Museum was founded in 1954 and was housed in the building which was originally designed as the venue of the Zagreb Fair on Savska Street, one of the busiest of Zagreb’s thoroughfares. The museum extends over a surface of 44,000 square meters, of which 14,000 is covered area. The original museum had three departments: the transformation of energy, transport and mining. The third department was soon joined by the oil department. Today’s department of mining, geology and oil features a replica of a coal mine complemented by a three hundred meter long test pit of a bauxite mine, which always attracts particular attention by visitors.

The next attraction that was added to the museum was a planetarium in the department of astronomy. That was followed by the Nikola Tesla demonstration cabinet. The last two departments that were opened to the public were the firefighting department and a museorama depicting land survey and a cadastre.
