Intimism in Croatian Painting
The lovers of the fine art associated with the period of the so-called the intimism have an excellent reason to visit an exhibition which remains open at Zagreb's Modern Gallery until the 13th December. The exhibition offers over 160 works of art by the greatest names of Croatian fine art produced during the first part of last century.
The showrooms of the Modern Gallery on the first floor of the Vranyczany Palace in Zagreb’s Zrinjevac Park are the venue of a large exhibition “Intimism in Croatian Painting” which remains open until mid-December and displays over 160 works of art. This is the largest ever exhibition themed around the most personal art inspirations of some 40 authors, members of certain circles which explored their own intimacy and created their opus between the 30’s and the 50’s of the 20th century.
As was said at the opening of the exhibition, intimism is not a style but rather a morphological feature of the tendencies which coexisted in European fine art during the 20th century. The period of intimism followed the period of historical avant-garde movements and marked a return of sorts, a reaffirmation of traditional artistic values. This thematic cycle embraced many well-known names, such as Emanuel Vidović, generally accepted as the founder of intimism in Croatia, Slavko Šohaj, Antun Mejzdić, Edo Kovačević, Marta Erlich, Bruno Bulić, Gabro Rajčević, Ivo Dulčić, Milivoj Uzelac, Ljudevit Šestić, Nevenka Ðorđević, Leo Junek, Jerolim Miše, Ljubo Babić, Antun Motika, Juraj Plančić, Vilim Svečnjak, and others.
The exhibition, which displays the richest ever opus of the aforementioned authors was being prepared for over three years and the works were collected from various sources ranging from numerous museum holdings worldwide to private collections.
