Advent in the heart of Zagreb

On the eve of the Advent and the holiday festivities, the city centre will feature attractive daily programs intended for all generations, which will continue into the New Year, after the celebrations at the main city square.

Winter in the heart of Zagreb will, once again, be marked by the festive holiday atmosphere, as several locations across town will traditionally serve as venues for interesting cultural and entertainment programs. The liveliest area will be the main city square, where programs will take place every day in the open air as well as within a large heated tent, which will host numerous singers and performances by various cultural and artistic associations. All of these events will be complemented by a rich culinary selection. Furthermore, the streets around the square of Ban Josip Jelačić, Gajeva, Bogovićeva, Margaretska and Petrićeva, have been hosting the traditional Christmas fair since late November and attractive wooden stands at these locations offer a selection of Christmas gifts.

The traditional program, “Advent in the Heart of Zagreb”, will once again be organized at the central square, where numerous events will take place on the main stage between the 6th and the 20th of December. Apart from performances by famous singers, cultural and artistic societies, folklore groups, children’s choirs, bands, dance ensembles, and small theatre troupes, various tents will also feature children’s workshops, video projections of cartoons, etc. On weeknights, programs will take place between 6 and 9 p.m., while on weekends, they will take place between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. All of these events will feature introductions by Father Christmas, who will be present at the square the entire time.
It will also be festive in front of the Zagreb cathedral where, between December 23rd and January 6th, there will be a live nativity scene. Audiences will also have an opportunity to enjoy two concerts by the mixed Cathedral choir on December 5th and January 2nd, both starting at 5 p.m.

Like the previous years, New Year’s Eve celebrations will be organized at the main square and will feature performances by many pop stars as well as a grand fireworks display. Zagreb’s visitors are also in for a treat as, from 7 p.m. on January 1st, there will be a New Year’s folklore evening at the city theatre Komedija (Theatre of Comedy).
The large, heated tent at the main square will remain open until January 10th.
