Jews Hold the European Day of Jewish Culture Event
The European Day of Jewish Culture will be marked on September 6th at the Jewish Community Center in Mažuranić Square. The building will be open to visitors between 10 AM and 6 PM. All are welcome to learn about Jewish holidays and the way they are traditionally celebrated.
The Bet Israel Jewish Community will mark the European Day of Jewish Culture on September 6th. The 10th jubilee edition of this important project will be held on the premises of the Jewish Community Center at 6 Mažuranić Square, which also houses a synagogue.
On that day, the Jewish Community building will be open to visitors between 10 AM and 6 PM. All are welcome to visit the exhibition themed around Jewish holidays and the way most of them are traditionally celebrated.
Throughout history, local Jews have contributed greatly to the development of Croatian economy, science and culture, particularly since 1806, the year when the Zagreb Jewish Community was established. At that time, it had no more than 70 or so members. Its activities peaked between the two world wars. In 1941, the Jewish Community had 11,000 members who were actively involved in various cultural, charity and sporting events. Unfortunately, only a fourth of the Zagreb Jewish population survived World War II. Currently, the Zagreb Jewish Community has about 1,500 members who are actively pursuing activities to promote cultural and traditional values.
