75th Edition of Boris Hanžeković Memorial: Once Again Zagreb to Become the Centre of World Athletics in May
The Boris Hanžeković Memorial is one of the oldest sporting events in Croatia. This year it marks 75 years since its foundation with the arrival of the world athletics elite.
The Boris Hanžeković Memorial, which has taken place for 75 consecutive years, will host many of the world’s best athletes from 22 to 24 May. In this period Zagreb will become the centre of world athletics. Competitions will take place on two locations; Zagreb City Challenge and the Ivan Ivančić Memorial will be held in the area of City Fountains which athletes are already familiar with, while the Boris Hanžeković Memorial will be organised at the Mladost Sports Centre. On the occasion of the grand anniversary of the Memorial, that is 75 years during which it has taken place without interruption, an exhibition will be held from 22 to 23 May in the lobby of the National and University Library in Zagreb.
Around ten thousand visitors from Croatia and abroad are expected to come to the Boris Hanžeković Memorial, which is a first-class sporting, social and tourism event. Last year spectators from as many as 140 world countries watched the event so it is expected that this number will be exceeded this year.
The Boris Hanžeković Memorial, which was named after the best pre-war Croatian athlete and a brave patriot (he lived from 1916 to 1945), is famous not only for its records, competitiveness and fair cheering but also for its excellent atmosphere at the site and throughout the city.
