PLACe Market: Interesting Nightlife of the Dolac Market
If you wish to taste specialties of Croatian gastronomy and enjoy a special atmosphere, come to the Dolac Market in the very centre of Zagreb on Friday evenings.
Every Friday from 11 April to 11 July the PLACe Market will take place at the Dolac Market in the very city centre starting at 18 o’clock. Famous professional chefs will prepare specialities of the Zagreb area and other Croatian regions at the city market which was built in 1930. All the dishes are prepared from locally grown, fresh ingredients and are put together by excellent gastro experts.
Every day citizens of Zagreb get their groceries from as many as 28 city markets, referred to as plac in the local dialect. This is where they buy vegetables, fruit, dairy products and meat from local family farms and other producers. Going to the market, especially during the weekend, is a ritual of many citizens. They will usually buy groceries, often a posy and take a break with an obligatory morning cup of coffee.
However, in addition to its important and dynamic morning role of the belly of the city, Zagreb’s Dolac Market has gained interesting nightlife. It is no wonder that both citizens and tourists love to go to the PLACe Market on Friday evenings, even more so because they are welcomed with excellent food and drinks and a matching atmosphere, accompanied by interesting music.
Since the PLACe Market takes place on an open-air plateau, it is clear that a nice weather without rain is a precondition for it to take place. Good news is that the summer break is temporary and this popular gastro festival is to continue in September.
Zagreb’s PLACe Market is part of the national project the PLACe Market Croatia the aim of which is a cultural and tourism revitalisation of markets by presenting local produce, local food, culture and souvenirs.
