Animals Housed in New Quarters
In order to comply with European regulations on zoo management, according to which captive animals should be provided with the living space corresponding as closely as possible to their natural habitats, the Zagreb Zoo will open new quarters for large animals next spring.
Zagreb Zoo does not rank among the biggest in Europe; however it has always been a favorite of many animal-lovers and a beloved spot for family outings. The zoo is located in the beautiful park of Maksimir, an over 200-hundred-year-old landscaped garden not far from the city center. The park covers an area of seven hectares with a lake as one of its distinctive features. In order to comply with the European regulation on zoo management, the animals must be provided with a space corresponding closely in size with their natural habitat. Therefore, new quarters for large animals (lions, tigers, bears, etc.) will be opened in spring.
Through various programs of endangered-animal species protection, the Zagreb Zoo participates in the European Endangered Species Program. Two years ago, experts employed by the Zagreb Zoo managed to breed a rare bird species, the black-peaked toucan, outside its natural habitat and this reproduction in captivity is considered to be a major success in global terms. In addition to animal protection and scientific/research work, the Zagreb Zoo also focuses on the education of children. A part of the Zoo has been turned into an educational center that serves as a venue for children’s and family programs where new information and knowledge is acquired in an entertaining and interactive manner. The education center even organizes birthday parties for youngsters.
