The Oldest Gallery in Zagreb Celebrates 100 years

The oldest gallery in Zagreb, the Ulrich Gallery, is celebrating its 100th birthday. For that special occasion, the exhibition “Walking in Diversity” was opened in mid-September, presenting the works of six Croatian academic painters, whose creative diversity is reflected in the title of the exhibition.

The Ulrich Gallery was founded by the Zagreb artisan, glazier, and picture framer, Edo Ulrich. Fine art was his great love, which led to him turning most of his atelier into an exhibit salon. Croatian painters and sculptors of the time, the pioneers of Croatian modernism, exhibited their work there. Miroslav Kraljević, Vladimir Becić, Josip Račić, Jerolim Miše, Ivan Meštrović, Tomislav Krizman, Branko Šenoa, Krsto Hegedušić, Marijan Detoni, Ivan Generalić, and many other great Croatian artists had their first exhibition at the Ulrich Gallery. Since 1984, the gallery has operated as part of Likum – the Association of Croatian Artists, and it now occupies their premises in the city center on Ilica Street. Over the hundred years of its existence, works of more than 500 Croatian artists have been exhibited there. The Ulrich Gallery was the first gallery in Croatia to feature works by, then unknown, Slava Raškaj, who lived and worked at the turn of the 19th century and is considered the greatest Croatian aquarellist of all times.
